It’s been a couple of days since we posted so I thought I would let you know what we’ve been working on. We have quite a few projects going at once and none of them seem to be getting finished. Have I ever mentioned I have ADPD (Attention Deficit Project Disorder). If you’ve never heard of this I’ll try to explain.
While removing the never ending wallpaper from the downstairs stairwell and media room we decide we need a snack. Fortification not procrastination. So we head up to the kitchen. Our kitchen has an awkward layout that I thought we could live with for a while but is increasingly annoying so as we pile into the kitchen I look at our peninsula (that gets in the way) and think to myself, “Myself, we should just yank that thing out”.
After some checking we realize that the peninsula is not original to the kitchen so the biggest obstacle to removing it would be cutting a portion of the counter top to cover the 45 degree angle we would be removing from the end of the counter. No problem. Head to youtube and watch some videos . . . We’ve got this. Move the dishwasher back to the wall the sink is on (where it was originally) and the only remaining problem is the floor. I’ll get Raechel to paint a floor mat (like this) and presto, functional kitchen until we can get the flooring replaced.
We have a narrow granite top island from our previous home that we can use in the center of the kitchen so we will still have work space.
And a counter height table we can move from downstairs into the breakfast area (just need some new bar stools, another online shopping trip).
Oh, and did I mention we’ll have to rearrange the kitchen cabinets to make space for the stuff we are moving out of the peninsula?
After our snack we head back downstairs to work on the wallpaper.
We have lovely drop ceilings down here.
I wonder what we can do to make those look better. Internet search leads to the discovery that they make some great looking covers to cover those not so attractive acoustical tiles but the price tag is ouch! So what is an alternative? Paintable wallpaper? Stained luan (lauan)? Do we need to be concerned about building codes?
Back to scraping wallpaper. I wonder if the concrete floor under this nasty blue carpet is a smooth finished concrete. We could paint or stain the concrete and put a large rug down until we can afford the flooring that we want. Hmmm. Peel back the carpet and voila!
Completely possible. The linoleum on the other half of the floor would have to stay for now. Now to decide what color, what finish. How do we address the baseboards? Is there going to be a gap?
Speaking of baseboards, there is an area that’s damaged on one wall.
Its not bad enough to require replacing so how do we repair it? Back to the internet. Wood putty and some paint will probably be our best bet. Put that on the to-do list. (Ha! Like we have one. We would forget where we put it anyhow.)
Oh yeah, wallpaper. In between all of this there are kids, pets, laundry, dusting (okay, not a lot of dusting), meals and dishes. Not to mention we work (except Elle and Maddy).
So we’ve done a bit of work but not completed anything. Such is the joy of owning a fixer upper and having ADPD.
P.S. If I were to include every tangent we veer off to, this post would be too long to read.
How do you cope with ADPD? Do you have lists or just wing it?
