It is time for a Guest Room Makeover! When we purchased this home it needed some love. Our first order of business was eradicating the blue carpet and gold swirly wallpaper from the basement. It was not pretty. Now we are going to tackle one of the upstairs bedrooms.
Here’s what it looked like in the listing photos.
It has yellow wallpaper with moons and stars. Not quite the look we’re going for.
And here’s what it looks like now.
Not much has changed, eh?
We put a set of mattresses on the floor when my mom came to stay but I think having the mattresses on an actual frame would be much better.
This has been our middle daughter’s bedroom for the past three years. She’s 19 now. So sorry Elle. We love you 🙂 We removed all of the teenager trappings before we took these pictures. She had blankets and posters and all kinds of things on the walls to cover the wallpaper and of course lots of computers and TVs and books and clothes and empty soda cans…..
So we are finally going to turn this into a true guest room and tackle the wallpaper, the popcorn ceiling and a few other things. The carpet is staying for now as it’s not in terrible shape and I want to replace all the flooring on this level at the same time. I am looking for a fabulous rug though….on a budget.
This room gets tons of natural light and has a great view. You feel like you’re in a tree house up here in the summer and in the winter you can see the ridge of mountains around us. One idea I’ve had is to showcase our older daughter’s artwork here. This is my inspiration piece.
This is a large piece she did a couple of years ago. Lots of color and it’s huge! I want to pull some of the teal and gray from this for decor/furniture pieces.
I picked up an antique cannonball bed from the thrift store for $40. Someone tried to paint it with spray paint and then stored it in a garage, or shed, or barn. Somewhere the birds sat above it..yuck. It needs a good sanding and some filling of gouges and then I’ll decide whether to stain or paint. I was also able to pick up an old waterfall nightstand that has lots of veneer missing and more coming off and a cute MCM credenza that will work well for blanket storage, TV stand, etc. We also have this cute Hollywood Regency chair I’ve been thinking about redoing that may end up in here. Not sure yet.
The only repair that will have to be made in here is this gap between the drywall and ceiling. The ceiling in here is sloped above the walls. Not sure what it’s called but it looks kinda barn-like. And you can see that awesome wallpaper again.
So far the list is:
Scrape popcorn ceiling
Repair gap in drywall at ceiling
Beef up trim around windows and doors
Paint bed (?)
Paint storage cabinet
Hang gallery wall
Lots of painting in my future.

You’ll notice plenty of blues, teals and grays. You can also check out our Pinterest board for more inspiration. What do you think?
